QUIJANO, CRYAN & CHIVUKULA LOOK TO PROMOTE ENERGY INDEPENDENCE & SAVE STATE MONEY

(TRENTON) – Legislation Assemblywoman Annette Quijano, Assembly Majority Leader Joseph Cryan and Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula sponsored to promote independence from the traditional reliance on petroleum-based fossil fuels has been advanced by an Assembly panel.

The bill (A-1052) requires the state to purchase and use biofuels in place of fossil fuels if the cost is the same or less, and if the purchase and use of biofuels is deemed to be reasonable, prudent and cost effective.

“New Jersey is one of the leading states in the nation in the advancement of alternative energy technologies,” said Quijano (D-Union.). “Reducing our fossil-fuel dependence by using more renewable resources, such as biofuel has the potential to significantly improve local air quality, reduce the state’s dependence on foreign oil and reduce statewide greenhouse gas emissions.”

“It’s in everyone’s best interest for the state, when it makes sense to do so, to advance biofuel technologies by fostering the production and purchase of biofuels,” said Cryan (D-Union). “Promoting alternative energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reducing reliance on petroleum-based fossil fuels are smart approaches, both environmentally and economically.”

“New Jersey can lead by example by promoting alternative energies and helping boost their production right here in the Garden State,” said Chivukula (D-Somerset/Middlesex). “This policy could help save taxpayers money, create jobs and spark economic development, all of which would benefit New Jersey.”

The Office of Legislative Services concluded the biill has the potential of producing cost savings to the state. The bill was recently released by the Assembly Environment and Solid Waste Committee and is set for a Thursday vote by the full Assembly.
