QUIJANO, SCHAER, SCALERA, CAPUTO BILL URGING NFL TO PICK MEADOWLANDS AS SUPER BOWL XLVIII SITE APPROVED BY THE ASSEMBLY

(TRENTON) – A resolution sponsored by Assembly members Annette Quijano, Gary S. Schaer, Fred Scalera and Ralph R. Caputo urging the National Football League (NFL) to choose the new football stadium being completed in the Meadowlands as the site of Super Bowl XLVIII was approved Thursday by the Assembly.

“The Super Bowl being held in New Jersey will create hundreds of jobs for our residents, spur economic development and create a significant new revenue stream for a myriad of local businesses,” said Quijano (D-Union). “This, coupled with the state-of-the-art New Meadowlands Stadium and the massive improvements to transportation into and out of the area, makes Super Bowl XLVIII a top priority for the state in 2014.”

The Quijano/Schaer/Scalera/Caputo resolution (AR-75) urges the NFL to select the New Meadowlands Stadium as the host location for Super Bowl XLVIII. The sponsors noted that in December 2009, the NFL Super Bowl Advisory Committee granted the New Meadowlands Stadium Company – the stadium’s operator – preliminary approval to bid to host a Super Bowl, waiving the “weather rule” that requires the Super Bowl be played in a climate-controlled stadium or in a location with an average January temperature of at least 50-degrees.

“Hosting a Super Bowl in the Meadowlands would finally acknowledge New Jersey’s rich football heritage and reward tens of thousands of die-hard fans,” said Schaer (D-Passaic). “It also would be a huge boon to the local economies of East Rutherford and the surrounding municipalities.”

“Allowing the Meadowlands to host the Super Bowl would be a boon to New Jersey’s football fans and the economy alike,” said Scalera (D-Essex). “And it would help prove that the game can be as compelling in cold weather as it can in the tropics.”

“The new stadium is a stone’s throw from everything visiting Super Bowl attendees would need: hotels, restaurants, shopping and venues for parties,” said Caputo (D-Essex). “Allowing New Jersey to host a Super Bowl is an idea whose time has come.”

The measure was approved 78-0. The Senate has already passed the same resolution.
