Quijano Statement on Newtown Tragedy

Assembly Homeland Security Committee Chair Annette Quijano (D-Union) on Monday released the following statement on the tragedy that occurred in Newtown, CT:

“Each time a tragedy occurs it reminds us that we must be ever vigilant when it comes to our safety. After receiving word of the events that transpired at Sandy Hook Elementary School, I cried for the children whose lives ended much too soon and for the educators who lost their lives serving these children.

“Then I asked the questions that I’m sure are on many people’s minds. How could this have happened? What type of security was in place? How equipped are New Jersey’s schools to handle something of this magnitude?

“It is sad and unfortunate that the world has become a place where we must plan for the unthinkable. My heart breaks for these children, their families and this community and my thoughts and prayers go out to them.

“In the coming weeks and months we must take a close look at our own schools here in New Jersey to make sure we’re doing everything in our power to protect our children from something this unspeakable,” said Quijano.
