Quijano, Vainieri Huttle & Wimberly Bill Encouraging Out-of-State Companies to Do Business in NJ in Response to Disaster or Emergency Now Law

(TRENTON) – In order to encourage private entities to assist New Jersey in times of disaster or emergency, Assembly Members Annette Quijano, Valerie Vainieri Huttle and Benjie Wimberly sponsored legislation excluding these companies from paying certain state taxes while performing business in the state in response to a disaster or emergency. The bill (A-3699) was recently signed into law by the governor.

Assembly Members Quijano, Vainieri Huttle and Wimberly issued the following statements:

Assemblywoman Annette Quijano (D-Union): “We should remove any and all barriers potentially preventing companies from assisting us in our greatest times of need. By excluding these companies from paying certain in-state taxes, we will encourage businesses from all over the country to come to New Jersey during our most needy times.”

Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle (D-Bergen): “During a state of emergency or following a disaster, we will need all hands on deck to potentially restore critical infrastructure and utilities. If we were to impose state taxes on these out-of-state businesses, we could potentially dissuade them from providing assistance. Doing this would be a disservice to all of our residents, who deserve our best recovery efforts in these instances.”

Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly (D-Bergen/Passaic): “Taxes should never potentially prevent New Jersey from receiving the assistance necessary following a disaster or emergency. We owe it to our residents in these scenarios to provide maximum relief in an expedited fashion. If a company wishes to do infrastructural or municipal business to assist our state in trying times, we should encourage them to do so, not deter them.”
