Measure Now Poised for Final Legislative Approval
Legislation Assemblywoman Linda Stender sponsored to encourage donations to the American Red Cross was approved 39-0 by the Senate on Thursday and is now poised for final legislative approval.
“When disaster strikes, the Red Cross is often the first aid service on the scene, providing critical support to those in need,” said Stender (D-Union/ Middlesex/Somerset). “Providing New Jerseyans with the option to support this worthy charity is the right thing to do.”
The bill (A-1400) establishes the American Red Cross-NJ Fund and provides for a designation on the state gross income tax return that will permit taxpayers to make voluntary contributions to the fund to support the efforts and initiatives of American Red Cross.
“Along with disaster relief, the American Red Cross also offers compassionate services that help the needy, support and comfort for military members and their families and helps collect, process and distribute life-saving blood and blood products,” Stender said. “An average of 91 cents of every dollar donated goes to humanitarian services and programs.”
The measure was first approved by the full Assembly in March. The Senate later made several minor amendments in April, including moving the effective date up to this tax year, rather than the year following enactment of the bill. The Assembly must now concur with the Senate’s amendments before the bill heads to the Governor for his signature.
