Senator Joe Vitale, Speaker Craig Coughlin and Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez on Academy Bus Discontinuing Local Service in Sayreville to Manhattan

(SAYREVILLE) – This week, Academy Bus alerted our district office of its plans to discontinue the local Sayreville to Midtown and Wall Street bus routes. Academy Bus provided our office with information regarding its efforts to find another bus operator to take over the routes. Academy Bus has also provided our office with information regarding reduction in the company’s ridership.

As the State representatives of Sayreville, we immediately contacted the NJ Department of Transportation to request NJ Transit provide service on these routes. NJ Transit is currently reviewing our request. Simultaneously, we have coordinated with local leadership in Sayreville to meet with Academy Bus to gather more information regarding their decision. We are committed to making the Park and Ride more accessible to commuters, identifying ways in which we can increase ridership and make these routes sustainable now and into the future.

As riders were informed yesterday, Academy Bus will discontinue servicing the local Sayreville bus to Midtown and the local Sayreville bus to Wall Street beginning on March 1, 2019. For alternate routes, commuters may access service at the Cheesequake Park and Ride and the Rt. 9 Park and Ride in Old Bridge. Commuters who live in the Winding Woods Complex may take the M7 Commuter Shuttle offered by MCAT to three Park and Rides in the area and the South Amboy Train Station.

We ask that riders who are impacted contact our office by phone or email. We would like to collect riders’ information moving forward to update them on our progress as we work to maintain local service in Sayreville. Residents may call 732-855-7441 or 732-638-5057. They may email senvitale@njleg.org, asmcoughlin@njleg.org or aswlopez@njleg.org. Please reach out to only one of these numbers or email addresses as we share staff in our two office locations.
