Speaker Coughlin Hails Ruling Allowing for Legalized Sports Gaming in New Jersey

(TRENTON) – Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin (D-Middlesex) released the following statement Monday after the U.S. Supreme Court decision granting New Jersey’s request to allow legalized sports gaming:

“This is a great day for fairness – and for New Jersey.

“This ruling affirms what we’ve long believed – that the federal law was unconstitutional and detrimental to our state, while encouraging illegal sports gaming to flourish. I thank the court for giving this case due diligence and doing the right thing.

“New Jersey stands ready to implement well-regulated sports gaming that will bring in much needed revenue to our state budget. This will be a meaningful boost to our state economy. It will create more jobs and economic development in Atlantic City, which is always good news for the rest of New Jersey. It will also have the added benefit of helping minimize illegal activity, which of course is always a good thing.

“I have already been speaking to Gov. Murphy and Senate President Sweeney about how best to initiate and regulate sports gaming in New Jersey.

“I look forward to New Jersey implementing sports gaming as soon as possible, and I especially look forward to all the economic benefits that will follow.”
