Speaker Coughlin on Passing of Rutgers Research Pioneer Andrew Brooks

(TRENTON) – Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin (D-Middlesex) issued the following statement Tuesday regarding the death of Rutgers University research professor Andrew Brooks:

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of professor Andrew Brooks. He was a trailblazer who played an incredible role in the fight against COVID-19.

“Since March, more than four million rapid response tests have been performed following approval for home use. That would not have been possible without the tireless research conducted by Andrew which led to the development of the first coronavirus saliva-based test.

“Professor Brooks was a behind-the-scenes hero in the battle against COVID-19. He provided invaluable counsel as part of the New Jersey Economic Advisory Council I established to provide input and ideas to me and members of the State Legislature on how to move forward on recovery from the coronavirus.

“Andrew’s integral contribution to ensuring the health and safety of the American people will be forever remembered.

“I offer my sincerest condolences to Andrew’s family and friends.”
