Speaker Oliver: Great Day for Delaware, Sad Reminder for NJ

Assembly Speaker Sheila Y. Oliver (D-Essex/Passaic) on Wednesday released the following statement on Delaware becoming the 11th state to approve marriage equality:

“For Delaware residents, this is a momentous occasion and I applaud the Delaware lawmakers who had the courage to stand on the right side of equality.

“However, it is bittersweet to see the map of the Eastern seaboard rapidly lighting up green in favor of marriage equality while New Jersey remains mired in red. My heart breaks at the thought that full equality was within our grasp, only to be snatched away by one person’s political ideologies.

“Rest assured, we will continue to fight to erase this unfortunate distinction so that none of our residents are forced to endure second-class status.

“The will of the legislature and the overwhelming majority of voters who elected us should not be subverted by Gov. Christie’s concern over how he would be viewed by the GOP nationally,” said Oliver.
