SPEAKER OLIVER ON GAMING SUMMIT: WE CANNOT CONTINUE TO MAKE KNEE-JERK DECISIONS BASED ON THE POLITICS OF TODAY

(TRENTON) – Assembly Speaker Sheila Y. Oliver (D-Essex/Passaic) released the following statement Wednesday on the third and final meeting of the Legislative Gaming Summit at Monmouth Park Racetrack:

“Thirty years ago we had a great experience with gaming in New Jersey. However, we failed to raise the necessary questions perhaps going back 15 years and now we are at a critical juncture.
“Our objective as legislators should be on maintaining, sustaining and expanding jobs and economic opportunities in every gaming and entertainment region of our state.
” Shutting down jobs at the Meadowlands, Monmouth Park or any other site will create a palpable economic hole. Consideration needs to be placed on our needs 10, 20, even 25 years down the line.
“We are in the place we are at now because we made knee-jerk decisions based on today and the politics of today.”
