SPEAKER OLIVER’S STATEMENT ON CHRISTIE CUTS TO CRITICAL PROGRAMS IN DEMOCRATIC BUDGET

Assembly Speaker Sheila Y. Oliver (D-Essex/Passaic) today issued the following statement on the Governor’s decision to use the line-item veto option to eliminate critical programs funded in the democratic budget that was passed yesterday:

“The Governor’s decision is unfortunate and heartbreaking to the millions of hard-working New Jerseyans who rely on the programs we funded in this year’s budget. However, it is not altogether surprising given the obstinacy that has guided many of his decisions.

“The Governor would rather jeopardize the well-being of the people who elected him to office in order to score points with the national conservative media. A true leader understands that their decisions should be guided by the greater good of our state.

“During this budget cycle, we listened to hours of painstaking testimony on the ramifications of the Governor’s budget cuts and we worked hard to create a budget that represents true shared sacrifice and protects the most vulnerable among us.

“Despite the Governor’s short-sighted decisions, we will continue to be guided by those goals.
