Speaker Prieto on Signing of Bill to Help Implement Criminal Justice Reform

(TRENTON) – Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto (D-Hudson/Bergen) released the following statement Monday after legislation he sponsored (A-4428) to support the implementation of constitutional and statutory criminal justice reform was signed into law:

“Adding more judges should never be taken lightly, but in this case it was absolutely necessary and, most notably, for the benefit of everyone in New Jersey who comes in contact with our criminal justice system.
“The criminal justice reforms approved by voters in 2014 must move forward and must do so with the proper resources. This change, which officially began on Jan. 1, includes new pretrial release and detention proceedings, and speedy trial rights. This is the right and just thing to do, and with these new judges soon in places, I’m confident it will be done the right way.
“I look forward to the positive results – and the improved justice – this change will help provide.”
