Various experts and stakeholders have debated the merits of a regional approach to reopening New Jersey during the COVID-19 pandemic in comparison with the uniform approach the state is currently taking. In an effort to learn more about both the benefits and implications of a regional approach, the Assembly Commerce and Economic Committee held a public hearing on the subject Thursday.
After receiving testimony from several speakers, Speaker Pro Tempore and committee Chairman Gordon Johnson (D-Bergen) issued the following statement:
“The testimony we received today from public health experts and business owners in various different industries provided our committee with valuable insight. We now have a better understanding of certain approaches other states have taken and how New Jersey’s current procedures impact local communities.
“It is important to balance public health and economic considerations when determining the effectiveness of any particular approach. Ultimately, we are all trying to find the best way to safely and successfully reopen our state in the midst of a worldwide pandemic.
“I want to thank everyone who participated in today’s hearing to provide their perspectives on this complex subject.”
