Spencer Commends Assembly Judiciary Committee for Prudent Scrutiny of Exxon Settlement Debacle

Committee held hearing today on Gov. Christie’s decision to settle with oil giant for $225 million despite initially asking for $8.9 billion in damages

(TRENTON) – Assembly Environment and Solid Waste Committee Chair Grace Spencer (D-Essex) today commended the Assembly Judiciary Committee for its work on the Exxon settlement debate, and its efforts to answer some of the pressing questions that have risen since news broke that the administration agreed to settle for a fraction of the $8.9 billion in damages it originally asked for:

“The Exxon settlement leaves a lot to be desired. The more we hear about this decision the more questions and concerns arise about why the administration thought less was more.

“This matter deserves scrutiny because of the impact on our natural resources and the communities affected by the contamination. After hearing today’s committee discussion led by committee chair John McKeon, I am confident that this issue will receive the careful and impartial analysis it deserves.”
