Legislation sponsored by Assemblywoman Linda Stender to help improve passenger safety along New Jersey rail lines was advanced by an Assembly panel on Monday.
“We shouldn’t wait until a tragedy strikes to explore ways we can improve safety at our rail stations,” said Stender (D-Middlesex/Somerset/Union). “The Long Island Railroad had a number of high-profile accidents in recent years in which passengers have been injured falling through the gap between platforms and trains, underscoring the importance of taking whatever precautions are necessary at New Jersey’s rail stations.”
The bill (A-1195) would require New Jersey Transit to conduct a study and prepare a report on platform safety at its rail stations, particularly when it comes to the space or “gap” between the station platforms and the trains.
The bill directs New Jersey Transit to make recommendations as to modification or extension of the station platforms, training of station or train personnel, and the use of educational programs, signage or public announcements, for the benefit of passenger safety.
The report would be submitted to the Governor and the Legislature and to the transportation committees of both houses within six months.
The measure was approved by the Assembly Transportation Committee and now awaits consideration by the full Assembly.
