Sumter to the Congresswomen “Squad”: We’re All In.

Assemblywoman Shavonda Sumter issued the following statement on President Trump’s comments regarding four United States Congresswomen Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York:

“I am proud to see the courage, grace and poise of these four Congresswomen. They refuse to be distracted by name-calling and are using the power of the elected seat to make change. They are doing exactly what they should do.

“As far as I’m concerned, Congresswomen Omar, Tlaib, Pressley and Ocasio-Cortez epitomize the ultimate ‘squad goals’ by serving as an inspiration to young women everywhere. And many must realize that they are not a squad of four, but a squad of many, men and women, across the country that stand with them. We’re all in.

“The comments referring to their ethnicity and birthplace were yet another tactless, hateful example of our country being steered in the wrong direction, going backward not forward. It’s unproductive and the opposite of progress.

“Let’s keep fighting for humane immigration. Let’s keep fighting for justice for families. Let’s keep fighting for women’s right to healthcare and equal pay. Let’s continue to fight for our democratic values.”

A morning press conference will be held tomorrow, Tuesday July 23, at 11:30 a.m. in the Senate Press Room on the first floor of the State House across from the Assembly Chambers, Room 103.
