THURSDAY: Major Gun Safety Bills to Be Considered by Assembly Law & Public Safety Committee

Bills on Childproof Handguns, Justifiable Need Requirement Top Committee Agenda

Major gun safety bills – including legislation that would prevent accidental gun deaths involving children and legislation to overturn the Christie administration’s efforts to weaken New Jersey’s strict gun laws – are up for consideration during Thursday’s Assembly Law and Public Safety committee meeting.

The meeting, which is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., will be held in Committee Room 13 on the 4th Floor of the State House Annex in Trenton. Audio will be streamed live here.

Highlights of the committee’s agenda include the following gun safety legislation:

  • A-1426 (Johnson/Vainieri Huttle/Eustace) – Requires firearm retailers to sell personalized handguns
  • A-3689 (Greenwald) – Codifies regulations defining justifiable need to carry handgun
  • ACR-175 (Greenwald) – Determines that State Police rule to expand definition of justifiable need for purpose of handgun carry permit is inconsistent with legislative intent.
