Vainieri Huttle Named Chair of New Assembly Senior Services Committee

With years of legislative experience to draw upon, Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle has been named Chair of the Assembly Senior Services Committee by Speaker Craig Coughlin. Assemblywoman Shanique Speight has been selected as Vice Chair of the committee.

As leaders of the Senior Services Committee, they will oversee the consideration of bills during the 219th legislative session that are related to various benefits, protections and rights of senior citizens.

This committee is new to the Assembly, as it was previously a part of the Health and Senior Services Committee. Upon deciding to separate the two topics into separate committees, Vainieri Huttle was chosen to lead the effort to address issues affecting elderly residents throughout New Jersey.

Vainieri Huttle has been a member of the New Jersey General Assembly since 2006, as a representative of the 37th district. She has sponsored hundreds of bills, many of which aimed to protect the health and wellbeing of vulnerable residents.

In addition to serving as Deputy Speaker, she has also chaired the Human Services Committee and the Homeland Security and State Preparedness Committee in past legislative sessions.

“I am honored to serve as Chair of the Senior Services Committee and look forward to utilizing my years of experience in the Assembly to address the needs of the more than one million seniors who call our state home,” said Vainieri Huttle (D-Bergen).

Speight participated in the Health and Senior Services, Women and Children, and Housing and Community Development Committees during the prior legislative session, and has a degree in Human Services.

“I am pleased to continue my work on behalf of senior citizens by serving alongside Assemblywoman Vainieri Huttle on this committee, as we endeavor to make sure our state’s aging population is properly cared for and protected,” said Speight (D-Essex).
