VAINIERI HUTTLE URGES NEW JERSEYANS TO CONSIDER DONATING TO CHILD ABUSE FUND

Residents Can Donate Through Income Tax Return

(ENGLEWOOD) — Assembly Human Services Committee Chairwoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle on Wednesday urged New Jerseyans to consider donating money through the income tax return to help prevent child abuse.

Vainieri Huttle (D-Bergen) noted that residents can check box 58 on their state income tax return to donate money to the Children’s Trust Fund. The fund supports child abuse prevention programs throughout New Jersey.

“This is a quick and easy way for all of us to do what we can to create a better future for our children,” Vainieri Huttle said. “Not everyone can afford to donate a huge amount, but even a few dollars here and there would bolster our efforts to improve families and protect children.”

According to the Department of Children and Families, the fund earns most of its money from the state income tax check off. Taxpayers can donate whatever amount they choose. The New Jersey Children’s Trust Fund was created by law in 1985 to fund child abuse and neglect prevention programs in New Jersey communities.

The fund identifies and supports local child abuse and neglect prevention programs by awarding grants annually. Grants are awarded to establish effective child abuse and neglect prevention programs. Funding is awarded on a competitive basis.

Examples of grant recipients include programs that help prevent shaken baby, parenting education for fathers and teens, programs for families recovering from substance abuse and training for teachers on identifying and referring families for assistance.

“I’d like to see us improve upon the $197,000 that was raised by the fund last year,” Vainieri Huttle said. “These are difficult economic times for everyone, without question, but finding alternative ways to raise money to protect abused children has never been more important. I just ask everyone to do what they can to help.”
