Vainieri Huttle Welcomes Marriage Equality Ruling, Urges State to Let Decision Stand

Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle welcomed the decision Friday by Mercer County Superior Court that New Jersey’s civil union law is no longer constitutional and same-sex marriages shall be permitted beginning on Oct. 21, 2013.

“This is an historic moment for the countless same-sex couples who saw this milestone denied last year when Gov. Christie vetoed marriage equality legislation passed by the legislature.

“If we have learned anything from our past, it’s that government-sanctioned discrimination will inevitably become a shameful chapter in our history. Today’s decision marks the start of a new chapter, one marked by justice and true equality for all of our residents.

“This is a milestone that should be celebrated and embraced, not impeded. It is my sincere hope that the state will let this decision stand,” said Vainieri Huttle (D-Bergen).
