The questioning came during Wednesday’s Assembly Budget Committee hearing with the Department of Health.
The New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research historically has received $1 million each year in the state budget, but Gov. Christie has proposed cutting the funding. An estimated 51,680 New Jersey residents will get cancer in 2017, and about 15,880 will die from the disease.
