Wimberly Denounces President Trump’s Proposed Cuts to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

After hearing of the Trump Administration’s plan to cut SNAP benefits for 400,000 American households, Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly (D-Bergen, Passaic) issued the following statement:

“It is unconscionable that millions of Americans struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table are now in jeopardy of losing SNAP benefits due to the Trump Administration’s cruel proposal to restrict eligibility.

“In New Jersey, 68,000 residents stand to lose access to the program. That is simply not acceptable. These are our most vulnerable. These are also our friends and neighbors.

“New Jersey’s charities, food banks, food pantries and soup kitchens do not have the capacity to make up for this loss in federal benefits.

“Our children will also suffer if the proposed changes to SNAP are enacted. More than half a million students would lose access to free school lunches.

“I vehemently condemn the President’s plan and will continue to fight on behalf of those who depend on us to lend a helping hand.”
