Wimberly Statement on Secretary Carson’s Proposal to Raise Rent on Low-income Housing

Assembly Housing and Community Development Chairman Benjie Wimberly made the following statement on U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson’s proposal to raise rent on low-income housing:

“Secretary Carson’s proposed plan to increase rent for those living on housing assistance is housing discrimination, plain and simple.

“Although he has backtracked on his proposal in recent days, the simple suggestion that rent for the poorest people in our country would triple in amount – which, in many cases, could add up to more than what some make in one week’s work– is insulting to those who are struggling to make ends meet and to provide for their families.

“As chairman of the Assembly Housing and Community Development Committee, this is an issue we will keep on our radar and do what we can in New Jersey to protect residents living in affordable housing.”
