(LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT 19) — Assembly Deputy Speaker John S. Wisniewski and Assemblyman Craig J. Coughlin (both D-Middlesex) on Monday announced the awarding of $1.159 million in state Department of Transportation (DOT) Local Aid grants for all five Middlesex County municipalities in the 19th Legislative District, which the pair represent.
“These funds will help maintain our neighborhoods and property values without adding to the local property tax burden,” said Wisniewski.
“These road projects also will create private sector jobs for contractors and work crews who are eager for work after facing nine percent unemployment over the last two years in the state,” said Coughlin.
The NJDOT’s Local Aid and Economic Development grants are funded through the New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund, which provides $175 million annually in state aid to municipalities for local road, bridge and other transportation improvements. Several programs also are funded with federal funds available through the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA 21).
Municipalities in the 19th District will receive $1,158,522 in funding for the following projects:
- Carteret — $300,000 for improvements to the intersection of Roosevelt Avenue/Minue Street/Post Boulevard. The intersection serves as a major thoroughfare for cars and tractor trailers utilizing Exit 12 of the NJ Turnpike;
- Perth Amboy — $191,600 for improvements to Davidson, Bertrand, Gifford and Stockton Streets and Watson Avenue. All of these roads are located off the busy shopping district on Smith Street;
- Sayreville — $250,000 for improvements to Ernston Road. These improvements will help to alleviate traffic on this busy thoroughfare.
- South Amboy — $206,422 for repairs to, and the restoration of Pupek Road, a long residential street in the city; and
- Woodbridge — $210,500 for the milling and resurfacing of Correja Avenue and Charles Street, which span parts of Colonia and Iselin.
