Assembly Transportation Chair Benson on Governor’s Executive Order Calling for NJ Transit Comprehensive Audit

Assemblyman Says Audit will Prepare a Roadmap for Further Reforms and Where We Can Bring Needed Relief Fastest

(TRENTON) – Assemblyman Daniel Benson (Mercer, Middlesex) issued the following statement supporting the Governor’s Executive Order calling for an audit on NJ Transit operations:

“This audit will bring actionable insight into NJ Transit’s day to day operations. That is exactly what we need to get NJ Transit operating more effectively and safely again.

“For too long NJ Transit has been marked by patronage and mismanagement, we must do better. Fixing the broken system at NJ Transit is a top priority for myself and the committee. Thousands of New Jersey and New York residents rely on NJ Transit to get to work daily and the downturn of its daily operations has taken a toll on commuters and their families over the last eight years. Building off the hearings done by the Legislature last session, this audit will help prepare a roadmap for further reforms and where we can bring needed relief to commuters the fastest.

“Drastic budget cuts, lack of capital upgrades, staffing procedures, substantial fare hikes…the list goes on and on as to the reasons why this audit and other reforms are welcomed by the Assembly Transportation committee. We look forward to moving forward with hearings from stakeholders continuing the work done in the last session. Making sure every rider on NJ Transit arrives at their destination on time and safely is our first concern. This audit will play a major role in getting us there.”
