Murphy: Raising Awareness about NJ’s Safe Have Program Can Help Save Lives

(TRENTON) – Assemblywoman Carol Murphy (D-Burlington) questioned the state Department of Children and Families during Monday’s budget hearing on how information about the state’s safe haven program is disseminated, following the death of two babies who were abandoned last month.

“These stories are heartbreaking.

“Even more heartbreaking is that there is a system in place to help these women and protect these children, but it was not utilized. Had it been, these babies might still be alive.

“We need to do a better job at getting the word out about the safe havens program so we actually reach the people we need to reach. We also need to do a better job at reaching homeless women who are pregnant and want to know what they can do for children that they simply can’t provide for.

“The lives of these children are at stake.”
