Speaker Prieto Offers Condolences on Passing of Former Rep. Marge Roukema

Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto on Wednesday offered his condolences on the passing of former Congresswoman Marge Roukema and hailed her pioneering career in the House of Representatives.

“Few people in New Jersey politics displayed as much passion and independence as Marge Roukema. Her advocacy on behalf of the rights of working families was admirable and an inspiration to this day.

“She’s also a reminder of a more compassionate and civil era in American politics when issues trumped ideals, a lesson we can all still learn from.

“Since her retirement, her legacy has also been a reminder of New Jersey’s woefully inadequate representation of women in Congress. It’s a somewhat fitting tribute that we are finally sending another woman to Congress now.

“Marge and her contributions to New Jersey’s families will not be forgotten.

“On behalf of the General Assembly, I offer my sincere condolences to her family and friends.”
