Sumter Named Chair of Assembly Community Development and Women’s Affairs Committee for the 221st Legislative Session

TRENTON (January 25, 2024) —Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin has named Assemblywoman Shavonda Sumter to chair the Community Development and Women’s Affairs in the current legislative session.

This newly formed committee will focus on legislation designed to improve and enhance the operations of municipalities and counties, as well as focus on local finance, local public contracts, property taxes and more. At the same time, the committee will also handle issues concerning the status and welfare of women.

“Chairwoman Sumter is uniquely qualified for this expanded role,” said Speaker Craig Coughlin (D-Middlesex). “She has served with distinction, leading the Community Development Committee, building consensus to tackle tough issues and deliver solutions for long-neglected challenges. She has also made a huge impact as the author of transformative legislation for New Jersey women over her career.”

“Bolstering community development benefits women, and creating opportunities for women strengthens community development,” said Assemblywoman Sumter (D-Bergen, Passaic), who is also the Chair of the Legislative Black Caucus. “I look forward to working with members of my committee over the next two years to pass meaningful legislation that both furthers opportunities for women and strengthens communities all around the state.”

Assemblywoman Sumter also serves as the vice chair of the Assembly Environment, Natural Resources, and Solid Waste Committee and has been a member of the General Assembly since 2012.
